For over a decade my courses have included a weekly (8-10 weeks each semester) essay assignment. The learning value of such essays comes from the ongoing and periodic reflection, the need to engage the reading assignments, the improvement in writing, and the sharing that occurs among students from reading and occasionally responding to one another's thoughts.
